If you’ve been in NYC recently, you may have noticed something incredible—a herd of 100 life-sized Indian elephant sculptures has taken over the Meatpacking District! This isn’t just some random art display though, it’s part of a global mission to raise awareness for conservation efforts worldwide.

These elephants are more than just art—they carry a message. As Jeffrey LeFrancois, the executive director of the Meatpacking District, puts it, “It’s public art with a message about community and coexistence.” It’s called "The Great Elephant Migration," and it’s actually one of the biggest outdoor art installations NYC has seen since The Gates by Christo and Jeanne-Claude in 2005.

But what makes this even more special? These sculptures were handcrafted by over 200 indigenous artisans from India’s Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Imagine creating sculptures based on elephants you know by name and personality—because that’s exactly what these artisans did. And here’s the twist: they made these beautiful creatures out of Lantana camara, an invasive plant species. So, not only are they making art, they’re helping restore their local ecosystem!
Life starts with a cry of pain, and when you die, it still remains. Cloudy skies filled with rain, weeping mothers in Ukraine; because their sons have all been slain.
You’ll find these elephants scattered across 9th Avenue, near Horatio and 8th Avenue, and even at Gansevoort Landing. They’ve made their way from Rhode Island and will be in NYC until October 20 before they migrate to Miami, Montana, and L.A. over the next year.
